Referral to children's dental hospital - missing teeth

DD, now just hit 17 months, went for her first dentist appointment today. She didn't get her first teeth until she was 13 months old and even then it was the 'wrong' ones - her top teeth. Infact, although she now has 7 teeth' she has still never got her two bottom middle teeth at all.

Although the dentist stressed that there is nothing to worry about he is going to refer her to the dental hospital to x-ray and check there, to see if they have ever developed in the first place. He did seem positive that even if these two milk teeth aren't present it is no more likely to be that the adult teeth won't be there than normal, soit shouldn't be a future problem.

Mind, it does mean she will be two teeth short for the tooth fairies! So they can save some pennies

On a serious note though, has anyone here heard of this? Dentist did think it might be hereditery but I don't know of anyone else in the families with this.

I'm the other way round; I still have some of my milk teeth as some of my adult teeth are missing. It must be hereditary as my dad is missing exactly the same teeth!
On the plus side, it means I never get food stuck in my teeth.

ooer I've never heard of anything like that. Ds is some teeth short at the top the two either side of his front ones (sorry don't know the technical name although I suspect that it's g or h). He didn't seem to get his in the right order, his due at the dentist next month for his second visit. Perhaps I should ask about it, round here they wont do anything unless you ask them to!

My ds didn't get his first tooth until 11 mo. And then proceeded to get the rest all in the wrong order. It seems to run in the family. My mother says that my grandfather got some of his back molars (not his wisdom teeth) in his 70's!

I still have a milk tooth.

I know someone who had a third set of teeth (mostly removed when he was an adult).

Similar to zebra - a friend's dd had some extra teeth removed. - had three at the front, one in front of the other two, which looked very odd.

One of my cousins had an extra tooth - in the roof of his mouth. He had it removed, but I don't think it's all that unusual.

I had some teeth taken out too as a teenager - not extra ones, just my jaw was too small for the teeth present and was knoking each other out of place.

Not found anyone with DD's experience of missing milk teeth yet though

My Ds will be one on Thursday and still no teeth. We are very hopeful though as he has had three days of bad nappies and a sore bum. Hopefully he will have one in time for his b-day!

louli - don't worry about it at all, DD didn't ger her first ones till 13 months, early 14 months. HV and dentist says it is quite common.
