Yellow runny liquid from nose like a nosebleed but no blood!

I have suffered for the last couple of yrs with sinus infections every few weeks.

Recently (over Christmas) I had my last infection, had ABs and nose drops etc.... The infection seemed to clear up although I did get left with a horrible smoky smell in my nose.

Tonight I felt like I had a nosebleed, yet when I grabbed a tissue there was no blood but very runny yellow liquid (sorry TMI) this lasted about 40mins on and off. It seems to have stopped now but I still have the smoke smell - its like a stale cigarette smell.

Anyone had this before, is it just another infection?

I get the yellow liquid draining from my sinuses when I have an infection. I don't get the smokey smell though. I'd see your GP as it has lasted quite a while and mine usually gives me antibiotics if it lasts more than 7 days.

It seems to have stopped now thank goodness.

Wish the smell would go, it seems worse in the evenings!! Have no idea why.

Go to the GP - tomorrow if possible.

Presumably you could ask them to try and take a swab, I just think it may help them give you the correct anti biotictics to get rid once and for all. I wonder if you could have had an abcess burst or perhaps you have strep A up there adding to the problem etc?

Smell sounds horrible.

Have you not had an ENT referral yet?? There are procedures which can sort out chronic sinusitis.

I don't want to worry you unduly but this could be quite serious and you do need to be seen very quickly and you need to stress the burning smell. :)

Ok, Ive had the yellow stuff before, didnt come to anything, think it was just a bit that was stuck and then came out.

however I would say that a smoky smell can but probably isnt indicative of something quite serious and I would call the doc in the morning.

i had something like this and had to have an op eventually, you have to see dr.

a neti pot could help in the mean time, ebay sell them and they're just water sinus washes really helps though

Cross posted with wmmc, yes you need to stress the smoky smell.

Yes I have seen an ENT Consultant and even had 2 minor ops. I am still getting the infections thou although they are nowhere near as bad as before.

I guess I have got used to the infections etc... but it was the yellow runny liquid coming from my nose tonight that got me as this has never happened before.

Dh had polyps removed from his nose which were causing chronic sinusitis. From what I remember he had to go back to hospital as a matter of urgency if straw coloured liquid appeared as it could be caused by a fractured skull!!!

Don't want to alarm you though Confused

Hmm. I had my first ever sinus infection after Christmas. It went away on it's own, but for a few days afterwards I had this weird smell in my nose- sort of like fried onions Confused. I think it's better now.

Look, I doubt you have a brain tumour FWIW - you would have other symptoms. But you may well have a raging infection which can get worse quite quickly. I developed meningicoccal septacaemia from a subcutaneous facial abcess (which started as a teeny tiny spot on my cheek and went inwards) which dripped pus (yellow) onto my brain stem. I deteriorated very quickly, developing flu like symptoms over the course of a few hours. I was lucky to survive it.

I tell you this because you need to let someone else know because infections inside the head can be bloody dangerous if they cause sepsis and if you fall unconscious alone, you can't call for help.

I understand what you are saying, I have DH here, so please do not worry.

Oh good. Hopefully you just have an infected sinus. Which is horrid, but better than the alternatives! :)

So, longshot as OP was 8 years ago, but did you ever get the bottom of this? experiencing it now along with a throat infection and google has me terrified!

This same thing just happened to me, tonight. I’ve been suffering from sinus infections for the past 15 years (once or twice per year) and recently I’ve had one for the past week. I blew my nose and out comes the usual green mucus slime and right after comes this golden yellow runny fluid almost like water or thin blood. At first I thought it was a nose bleed, as that’s what it felt like as it was trickling out of my nose. I’m guessing maybe it was some fluid that was trying to drain and had nowhere to go?
