Heard ds aged 2 talking to himself bout an hour ago went up and he was sat in the dark talking to the wall pointing at things and talking about things that arent there, this is not normal for him think hallucinating. took temp was 40.2. gave calpol checked him over rang nhs and now also spoken to dr who says check on him every now and then keep giving calpol and neurofen etc. Went to check his temp had gone down and its only down to 39.7/ 39.5 in left ear tried in right ear (dont ask me why!) and its normal 38.1/37.9. why is this?? Which one is right? He still feels very hot but my hands are very cold! Still talking to himself pointing to an (imagined) apple on his pillow but also talking to me and aware, doesnt seem distressed at all, quite happy really. Has been more sleepy than normal today but happy enough.
Scared the life out of me at first with talking to wall this is definately not normal for him and im normally quite a calm person when they're ill and things. Just off to check on him again, back soon. Hopefully

Is the hotter ear the one on the side he has been sleeping on? That's caught me out before now! The talking to the wall would have worried me too but check his temp. again in a few minutes and so long as it has come down he should be OK. Keep checking him, keep doisng him up, strip and sponge with tepid water if his temperature gets really high - ring the doctor if you are worried. Hope he's better in the morning.

That's dosing, not some bizarre pseudo-medical term.

Yup, and what aimsmum said too - an ear infection can make one ear hotter (forgot that. Have brain meltdown from listing stuff on ebay all night).

Have just checked on him again the hot ear is now 38.5 the cold ear is 37.7 and hes talking much more normally now too thank god. Dont think its from him lying on it as he's been busy sitting up talking to walls so not lying down and yeah i did wonder bout ear infection if that would make a difference so which side is his actual temp then? If its the cold one then that would mean he not had much of a temp at all in which case why is he talking to imaginary apples?! I know lots of 2 yr olds can sometimes be a bit like that anyway with imagination but its really not him. Thank you all for your quick responses by the way

Pesha, DS's ears are almost always different temperatures. These thermometers are very sensitive. DS (16mo) loves having his temperature taken and has learnt to do it himself! He periodically has temps of between 40 and 41 when he's teething, and it seems the ear nearest the inflamed tooth is usually hotter.

Just want to echo hunkermunker - dd and ds often have different temps in different ears. I just go by the hottest one!

Hope he's cooling down and is feeling better in the morning. Wee lamb

Have calmed down a bit now he's happily asleep and normal temp. Now i think about it they often do have different temps in each ear although not normally as much as this and its different every time you do it too which isnt much help really is it? Think i should just take it the once and then stop but i like to be sure although tonight i just confused myself more!
It was the talking to trains on the wall and pointing saying look train choo choo and daddy and then looking in the dark corner talking to daddy (who wasnt there) and pointing at an apple on his pillow and just generally rambling away in another world. Seems quite funny now but wasnt at the time. When i first went in I thought now is he hallucinating or is he talking to a ghost or something !

Pesha, dd always kind of hallucinates with high temp - is definitely delirious. Scary, isn't it? Hope he's feeling better this morning.
