Did I read recently that the rules for tax on airfares was changing on March 1st and under 15s were no longer liable? If so would we get any rebate on a fare for 14 yo dd already booked for March or might it only apply to subsequent bookings.

We had a rebate the other week for a flight booked last September for this August.

Thanks, dh thought I was imagining it! Will have to check the card we booked on, just in case.

Clay can I ask how you got the refund please? Did you email the airline you booked with? We have 3 under 15s flying to the US on 24th March so this would be a big impact for us. Try

Just found this article. Some airlines will do it automatically , others you need to contact.

Hi, we just got an e-mail from Monarch and then it was refunded straight into our account. We were lucky I guess. Sorry not to be of more help!

Why does it only appear to be for economy flights?

SoupDragon Sat 27-Feb-16 11:17:49

(I'm not expecting anyone to answer - unless you were involved in the decision making!)

It seems having checked out our tickets that we were sold them with the tax already deducted- we bought the tickets in July last year. We are flying Air Canada.

SoupDragon The tax is still applicable for Business Class and First Class fares at their respective rates.

SoupDragon Sat 27-Feb-16 15:07:51

Yes, I know. I wondered why.

PatriciaHolm Sat 27-Feb-16 15:40:29

From march 16 it will apply to kids in all classes.

PestoSkiissimos Sat 27-Feb-16 15:46:42

Not according to the government website PatriciaHolme It clearly states that with effect from March 2016 that only children under 16 years old in the lowest class of travel will be exempt from Air Passenger Duty. Children in all other classes of travel are chargeable passengers and Air Passenger Duty is payable.

PatriciaHolm Sat 27-Feb-16 18:06:17

Ah- sorry, I misread. It's expanding to under 16s but only in the lowest class of travel. It seems to be because it's intended to help families afford flight travel, and the assumption is presumably if you can afford to pay for an upgraded class then you don't need the help!
