Summer holiday in France - suggestions of places to stay somewhere between the ferry terminal and Bergerac

We're going to be spending a week near Bergerac and were thinking of getting an overnight ferry over to France and driving down, breaking the journey with a few days somewhere half way on the way down and the same on the way back. But France is a huuuuuge country and there's so much choice. Any wise MNers tried this and have any recommendations of places for us to try? And which ferry terminal they prefer too?

We have 3 kids - they will be 8,5 and 1. Beach or chilling in nice countryside good by us.

Ooh sounds really interesting LifeofPo - I like rivers and DS1 would love the cycle routes. Whereabouts in the Loire or south Brittany would you recommend? I've been to Caen/Falaise before but nowhere else on that side!
