We're thinking of going in October for 2 weeks and are wondering whether to hire a motorhome and stay at campsites as we tour round or to stay in one location such as Cape Town and rent an apartment and do day trips out and about. There does'nt seem to be much info out there about campsites with most tourist info geared up to staying in hotels or self catering lodges. Anyone with experiance?

I haven't toured but spent 9 fabulous day in Cape Town with my children and it is the bestest most beautiful place in the world.
We stayed in a hotel, had a car and did absolutely loads of days out. Both your options sound good to me.

Sorry just read the two week bit. How about a twin centre holiday?

I think that would be an amazing trip to do - we have toured around south africa several times and it is one of our favourite destinations in the world. There are campsites/caravan parks - security should be your prime concern really. With children, I would think about two/three bases and do day trips from there. holiday accomodation is of a very high standard imo and fairly cheap still.

I have a friend from South Africa and can echo oliverredds concerns about security. Please make sure that any campsite you stay in has proper security. Also, be careful about parking at the roadside for lunch etc.

Thanks for advice. Maybe the better bet is to have two bases then do days out from there.
Toomanyboysinmyhouse.. did you do any whale watching/shark trips. My boys will be 8 and 4. What hotel would you recommend?

I stayed at Hotel Protea President in the Bantry Bay area of Cape Town and that worked really well. The hotel had a nice pool , scrummy breakfast and sea views. We did lots of family days out that were an hour or less driving.
These included
Cape of Good Hope
Cable car to top of Table Mountain
Green Point Football Stadium
Boulders Beach to see the penguins ( twice)
stellenboch
Simons Town
Spiers wine reserve and Cheetha outreach centre
Lots of trips to V & A Waterfront for meals, shopping and a visit to Two Oceans Aquarium.
A morning on a lovely beach called Bikini Beach.
Visit to Castle, planetarium and the beautiful Kirshebosch Botanical Garden.
Camp Bay

A truly amazing holiday.
