Is there a "stop playing this song" button on the iPod option?? I can only find << II >> and no "stop"

i just skip to the next one or pause and switch off.

There's not a stop as there's no need for it.

Think of pause as being a stop with benefits

Things like tapes needed a pause and a stop as a stop would disengage the tape playing mechanism, a pause would simply stop the tape moving.

Leaving a tape paused could damage it as it was exposed, the device would often also keep things whirring ready to resume at a moments notice.

With electronic do-dads there's no physical bits left engaged or something left vulnerable during a pause, so a pause is all that's required.

Is it not a bit ridiculous not to have a stop button?

Why would you need a stop button?

It would do exactly the same as pausing or turning the player off except for remembering where in the track you were.

As remembering where in the track you were (which tapes could roughly do with a stop give or take a few seconds) might be useful why not just do it? Is it a problem?

Removing the stop, which isn't really needed by the machine or the owner, also cuts down on the number of buttons the gadget needs which is also always a good thing.

Why would I need a stop button?? Perhaps because I want it to stop?

Pause stops it. On an iPod if you press pause and don't touch it again for a minute or so it switches itself off. Same on the iPhone except the phone doesn't switch off but the iPod part does IYSWIM.
