DH and I are currently debating whether to go ahead and buy a laptop before DD1 starts her GCSEs. Not thrilled about this but all our DCs seem to have computer based homework regularly and there are just aren't enough hours in the evening for them all to share our very slow main PC which is on it's 'last legs'. Main consideration is the budget, I really don't want to go over £350 absoulte top price and value for money is a top priority too. (Don't want much do I? )

Can anyone tell me what I need to look for (in idiot proof language)? I really am not clever when it comes to IT things. It will mainly be used for surfing the net and creating files in Excel/ Word/ etc and other fairly run of the mill things.

I would be VERY grateful for any advice TIA

For web surfing and word processing a cheap basic netbook should be adequate. You don't need much. This HP Mini-note looks quite good for under £200.

The Mini-Note I mentioned has 1GB RAM and 120GB hard disk, which should be plenty for homework and music files. It does, however, run Linux, not Windows. This may be an issue if they need to run a Windows only program for any reason. Most games will not run on Linux.

Thanks guys, I've bought a Sony Vaio in the Argos sale for £349...Ouch. I was very interested in the Mini note but just not sure about not having Windows. Thanks so much for your replies and sorry I didn't reply before.
