please someone come and tell me what dvd/vcr recorder to buy - thank you so much

My lovely parents have bought us a very nice new LCD TV for Christmas (Sharp Aquos something if that means anything to anyone). We already have crappy old VCR and crappy old DVD player but everything was working fine with the TV until yesterday.

VCR doesn't tape anymore and so needs replacing - we have loads of stuff on tape so not ready to give it up. DVD player is a bit temperamental so time to replace that too I think.

So am thinking what we need is a combination VCR/DVD player? Am assuming I need one that specifies HDMI to make the most of the new TV? What should I get that won't be obsolete really soon?

Have to go out now but would love love love any recommendations.
