WORD experts - help with locking fields

Would really appreciate help from any Word experts out there.

I need to create a document that is mainly uneditable but that I can send to a third party for them to add only their logo.

Normally I pdf files to lock them - but this would lock the whole document.

Someone mentioned that you can lock the text in a Word document but just leave one field free at the bottom to edit. I've tried but I'm stuck - anyone know how to do this.

Thanks

What version of Word are you using?

OK, this will be fun 'cos I haven't used 2003 for ages and I am using 2007 now which is pretty different. I will give you the instructions for 2007 to be going on with (you might be able to relate them to what you have on your screen), but I will try to get you the correct instructions for your version.

On 2007 you click on the Developer menu, then 'protect document'.
Tick 'editing restrictions' and some more options will appear.
Select 'Exceptions (optional)', highlight the area you want to allow editing in, and select 'everyone'.

When you have finished selecting, click 'yes, start enforcing' and you will be asked for a password. Only those who have the password will be able to edit the bulk of the document.

Try Tools menu, then 'protect document'.

Rest of my instructions should make sense with what you have.

SaintGeorge - many thanks. That has worked - through the Tools menu.

Really appreciate it - you've saved me hours of searching.
