Do you see the adverts?
Do you see the mumsnet logo?
Do you see the menu bar below the mumsnet logo, or is it just text links?
Do you see Smileys

What internet browser are you using? Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari are the more popular ones... though there are various others as well. If you don't know... look at your browsers menu bar, click on HELP, then click ABOUT. Most browsers will have the About page accessible from the Help menu.

I think I am using internet explorer .... I used to be able to see the pics but now where the pictures should be it says "sorry we could not find" and I know the pics are there!

It says "Sorry we could not find".
I can see the photos on your profile fine, the photos are all hosted on the mumsnet server, so only thing I can think of is that at the time you tried, there was an issue with the server.
Is it still doing it now? Does it give an error message, if so what is the FULL message and how is it displayed (popup box, inside the space where the picture should be etc). There are pics on my profile, so look at those if you want, to confirm if photos are working.

Ah, I've just managed to duplicate the error.
It could be an Internet Explorer thing, as it works find in Firefox.

Photos are in the following format: www.mumsnet.com/12221.Ups

The extension is .Ups not .JPG .GIF .PNG so perhaps Internet Explorer does not know how to handle that, thus displays a default error image. FireFox reports that for the link above, the photo is JPEG image, 200x207 pixels.

Thanks nannynick - any ideas on how I can rectify it?

What version of Internet Explorer are you using (go on Help Menu and click 'about internet explorer'). IE6 manages to display the images just fine.

While changing browser to firefox may work it does mean learning how to use it and dealing with all the issues that has. You can't use it for the whole internet anyway.

Do you have Norton installed?

Hmm? not too sure, I did do when I first bought the laptop but it may have run out now ... would that have made a difference?

Might do. I know previously people have had problems seeing pictures on here when they have Norton installed.

That was back in the days of the old member profile threads though, don't know if that would make a difference.

Do you by any chance have Microsoft Works installed?

Report

Forget that. I saw that the file extension was listed as being for that and thought it might clash. But an experiment showed that it doesn't anyway

Thanks, I have been able to see them since I bought the laptop, and I haven't added any software (I don't think)... but for some reason lately I am unable to see any pics, have look at my security settings etc but can't seem to see the problem.
When I go into my mumsnet I can see my own pics, but just can't view anybody elses profile pics

If it is only a recent problem, have you tried clearing the cache? IIRC that was the advice Tech once gave for someone with a similiar problem and it seemed to work.

ok In laymans terms, what exactly is clearing the cache?
