Changing an iPod's battery

My iPod's battery seems to have died. It's failing to hold a charge so I need to replace it. The 'Genius' at Apple this morning said they would do it for £49 , which includes sending it away and giving me a replacement for the duration.

Online, I can get one here but I have to fit it myself.

I'm a reasonably competent person (I think!), can I do this myself and save £36? Or am I going to sabotage my iPod and curse myself to all eternity for being so presumptuous?

i tried to replace my wheel which is abit more tricky. it didn't work but the ipod was pretty dead. there is a good chance you will feck your ipod in the process. how old is your ipod and what kind?

Eeek! It's a 30GB iPod video, I've had it less than two years.

i think the apple philosophy is that folk should just replace these things every couple of years. i think you need to balance up spending £50 getting it fixed and £150 getting a new one. it sucks.

Thank you Sheherazade and soremummy.

I think what gets me is that I feel I'm being fleeced. I am perfectly happy with my iPod as it is and I don't like being manouevred into spending more money for something that I neither need nor want. it really sucks!

i think I'm going to go for it but will approach with extreme caution. May get DH to sit with me and and double-check. I will be devastated if I f**k it up but I can't afford either £49 of a new one.
