Switching off update notification

I know there is a way to do this because Computer Guy did it when he came last, but for some reason it's started up again.

Several times a day I get an annoying little "speech bubble" effect in the bottom right of my screen, where the toolbar lurks. It tells me that "Updates" for a certain program are available. I get rid of it by clicking the X in the bubble. And it returns. Again and again.

I want it to fuck off. Permamently. Please - how?

oh i hate that too but too lazy to go and find the switvch off i am guessing it is in windows settings

Sorry if you've already taken this into account, but if you allow the update to install, it usually disappears again for several weeks. Some updates are good to have, eg security updates, updates to Windows and the like.

OK, so I have switched off Update Notification in Control Panel and it is still doing it.

Control Panel - Security Center.

On the left hand side click "Change the way Security Center alerts me"

Untick Automatic Updates (and possibly the other two items as well)

aaagh - done it, still no good.

I still get "the bubble".

Really? If you've done both of those things there shouldnt be anything in the system tray at all to have a bubble over.
Is this perhaps a previous update that's stuck waiting for you to say it's ok to install it? It's been a long while since I had it allowed so I forget how it behaves.

Also have you restarted the PC since?
and what color is the little icon that's producing the bubble?

I haven't restarted yet - and it's yellow.

Do you mean auto updates for different software (e.g. logitech, shockwave, adobe).

You will have to look at the options for each software.

The easiest way is to make sure you untick hte box that says "check for automatic updates" when you install it.

Shockwave is the offender. I'll check it out.

To change settings in Shockwave you need to right click over any shockwave image.

Go to this Adobe test page and right click over the top (shockwave) animation and select properties. You will see the update option there.

It may prompt you to update shockwave and you might as well while you are there and then turn off the update reminder
