Digital camera / sd card / usb help

my digital camera takes and stores pictures, but won't now transfer them to my pc (using usb lead and kodak software that came with the camera). have re-downloaded software and no good, so i think something is broken.

Is there a device i can buy (card reader?) that will plug into usb socket and take my sd card, so I can download pictures from the card without the camera?

Yes. Look online or go to Currys.digital or PC World or your local computer or photography retailer. As you surmise, you want a "USB card reader" that takes SD cards.

Here is one suitable one online, for example.

Odd, charliecat... is it an SD card? And is it one of the newer HD SD cards? That's the only obvious thing I can think of (the photo machine in my local Boots won't read HD SD cards) -- but I would have expected that a new laptop wouold read even the new formats.
