iPod has died after downloaded update from Apple website. Any one know what to do?

DP downloaded an update for his iPod the other night and it has killed his iPod. It is totally, properly and seemingly irreversably dead, alittle like the Monty Python parrot. He has managed to boot it by forcing it into "disc mode" but by then reloading everything he reloads the same problem update and the iPod spirals into death again.

Is there any techno-masters out there who would know what to do? Is there a way to use System Restore to help?

Help!

Yes, restored - but it is restoring the update which kills it. It is a nightmare.

Mine did this. It was nothing to do with downloading the update, the hard drive just died. Fraid it was terminal.

Oh bum.

Thing is, his did it immediately after updating and searching the web it seems that his is not the only one. There are ways and means to drag them back to life, but DP can't find how.

what model is this device??.. sounds like you need to set the unit back to DFU mode.. there is a key combination to do this but depends on the model

Teenage DD says you need to send it back because you have now tried everything, she says look on apple website at the 5 R's.

if it is a nano or touch then the memory is solid state and they are pretty much impossible to break... just let me know the model

this used to happen with dh's ipod ALL the blardy time

we actually sent it back and got replacements almost 5 times

eventually we gave up and got a better model

did you update itunes and the ipod with the same update at the same time (this can affect it)? also, have you got any tunes that always jump or skip because sometimes there's something wrong with them which does something to the hard drive...

but yes, unless it miraculously springs back into life (which CAN happen if you leave it alone for something like 24 hours, this happened a few times, no idea why...leave it in disc mode and let it rest) it's terminal I'm afraid. If it is out of warranty, buy the extended cover now, wait a day and then get it replaced.

or just don't download the update. See if you can put it back into the old version - I tried this once but cannot remember how I did it (but don't, whatever you do, get rid of itunes and reinstall without your ipod functioning).

Sometimes these updates have snags which do this to some of the models. Have you checked the web to see if it's happened to anyone else?

Fox - it's happened to loads of people apparently - some can put it right it seems but DP has tried a fair bit so far - he has run diagnostics mode and it came up wtht he error code but can't find out what that is! When he gets back in I'll let him look at your suggestions to see if he has covered them all. Thanks

Opinionateddad - All I know right now is that it is an 80gb and the model number on the back says A1136. I did buy it for him last year from Ebay and looking in my Paypla records the title is just 80gb iPod. Nothing about a touch or nano. Does that help you decipher if it can be saved?

just buy the extended warranty right NOW and then send it back

they even told us to do that

Problem is Fox, I can't recall the thing ever having a warranty. I bought it off Ebay Am I just being dim? (answer: probably). I will have a word with DP to see if he has any of the paperwork.

I have discovered that the thing that it is doing is being stuck in a reboot loop.

you can look it up on the apple (ipod) website if you type its serial number in I think (if you registered it)

Ah, well that there be the first hurdle. O did do that a few days ago - seems it wasn't registered - don't think that DP would have and I didn't. It just comes up with "not eligible for service" (or suchlike). [doomed]
