Geeky stuff

Please could some kind soul help me with my broadband....

Sorry !!!

Connecting to the internet and e-mail today has been soo slow - almost as slow as when we had dial-up..

Done a quick test and our bandwith reading is 132.13 Mbps (We are paying for a speed of 8Mbs - am I right in thinking we are being gypped??)

Also run a Mcafee scan - thought that might help..

I do know that our broadband (wireless) set-up is not ideal, but our speed has been so slow..

If I phone the provider can they do anything (Tiscali)? Is there anything I can do ??

did tiscali tell you definitely 8mb? we are paying for 8 but in reality we only get about 2 or 3 because of where we are in relation to exchange. i would recommend double checking the bandwidth for your area. could be that everyone near you gets that slow a connection..in which case there's not a lot that can be done.

report the speed to tiscali (by email would probably be cheaper than by phone !). - I am fairly certain we were getting speeds of anout 1500 lastime I checked.

Unless you are close to the telephone exchange its doubtful that you would ever get 8Mbs tbh. These sort of claims by the broadband companys are a bit of a rip off IMO. We live over 3 miles from our exchange and the telephone engineer said that chances are we generally get a max of 2Mbs. tiscali sadly have a really bad rep for customer service.

The last time I called the 'help' line a helpful staff member put the phone down on me...

We don't do a lot any downloading so it was a free upgrade to 8Mb which was included in one of those package deals on offer... so I'm not too fussed about that, but would just like a reasonable browsing speed

It just seems to be a lot slower these past few days....
