How do I get my blog to show up in search engines?

Can anyone explain this to me please?

I've started a blog on Yorkshire food on Blogspot.com. It's not that I'm expecting, like, many people to read it, but I thought that if I googled I'd be able to find it (so I could tell my friends they could find it on google rather than having to write down the exact address for them).

It comes up about 45th in the list if I type 'yorkshire food blog' into google, way behind things that aren't actually blogs on the same topic but just happen to have the words somewhere on the same page.

Is there anything I can do to get it to come up higher up or do I just have to put up with it? Will it get better when it's been there longer?

google works by link rankings

the more people whose sites have links to yours the higher your ranking will be

or the other thing to do is use a more unique (hence more easily googleable) phrase on the blog

eg I can never remember the address of that famous paramedic blog but it is the top google result for 'womble porn'.

errm.. ..SEO is all well and good but you should also try and get noticed on the big aggregators (Google,Technorati, etc, etc, etc)

Blogs are more flighty (generally) than 'normal' websites. Make sure you blog is set to automatically 'ping' google every time you post a new article. You can also use www.bloggers.com/ to ping the fact you've updated to another 20 or so (some don't work) blog aggregators.

Oh and make sure you use tags - take a look at technorati and MoreOver for their tag sets..

That's plenty to be getting on with... ...off you go.
