Geeky stuff

I need to sort out my website - what's a good site for hosting and other questions...

I have come to realise that unless I get freelancing (am a copy writer) I am not going to earn any money at all for the next 5 years (due to having a toddler, being pregnant and not being able to afford childcare!)

I need a website though, or I will never get any work. I'm not great at this kind of stuff, and obviously if it looks rubbish, no one will employ me.

I bought a template package thingy from here but it's a bit rubbish; the template's quite restrictive and I'm sure I had half a page of ads down one side, which wasn't the look I was going for.

Is there such a thing as good free hosting or do you have to pay? Am skint so need it cheap but it also has to look good.

Also, if I just paid someone to do a simple 4 page website for me, how much would I be looking at? Millions?

Thanks if anyone can help!

I was going to say don't go with 123 reg as it's too restrictive!

Do you have a local uni/college nearby? Find a website designer/graphic designer/computer boff student and offer them a few hundred quid to do 4 pages. They'll be happy to do it as can add it to your profile, they'll be eager to please so more likely to listen to what you want too. The actual hosting shouldn't cost you a lot, lots of companies to choose from, even 123-reg just to host the site will be ok?

Cheers Lulumama, I was wondering if anyone was going to reply to this!

Will do some investigating. Where could I get a student from then? (see, am completely inept!)

I've got some nice websites - hosted by cj-hosting.com

I've had css pages written for me (or you can download free templates which are nice and easy to adapt, maybe in the dreaded FrontPage?) I think you could probably do this yourself for the price of domain registration and hosting alone

Oooh, there was a delay in everyone elses replies popping up there, sorry!

I've just been back into the dreaded 123-reg account and published a rubbish holding site just for the sake of it in the meantime. I will check out my options and will def consider shouting your DP Aimsmum!

(I'm taking my ex-employer to a tribunal; if he loses he may have to reimburse me for costs in setting up my own business, but there's no guarantee so am being a bit cautious!)

Hi! Come to this a bit late but will also throw my hat in and say that I am a web designer with my DH who does all the techy stuff (search engine optimisation, hosting, domain name reg, etc etc) so give me a shout if you need another quote.
