Does anyone know how to load a new printer onto a Mac?

Last ditch attempt: bought a new Epson printer/copier last week. Copier works fine but despite installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling etc etc) software to make Mac OX recognise the wretched thing, it refuses.

Spent hours on line to customer service who said that in "Printer Utilities" bit, there should be an option saying Epson USB but it there isn't (only says USB). That, apparently, is the problem - any ideas what to do next? I have bought a new USB cable but same problem - really need the printer to work .

You need the software to make the Epson option come up in utilities. Does the printer say it's compatible? The original printer I bought wasn't, so we took it back and swapped it. We have an Epson RX420 I think.

It said the printer was compatible and, certainly, the long-suffering woman on customer service seemed to know Macs quite well and didn't say anything like: "Oooh you never should have bought a DX4450 with a Mac OX". Is the software to make the Mac recognise the printer not part of software that comes with the printer? Or is it something extra?

Yes. The software with the printer tells the Mac how to find the printer. If the software doesn't work you're a bit stuffed..
