Hi. I was using my laptop last night and it crashed so had to turn it off and when I turned it back on I can hear the power running to it but the screen is black. Can anyone help please?

Ps I am using my nan's computer today.

Do you have the installation disks for it?

When mine did that it was due to the death of my hard drive - I lost everything that I hadn't backed up to DH's computer. Luckily it was still under warrantly as I had to send it back to Sony to be repaired (which they did very quickly and efficiently)

I NEVER switch my laptop off now - only hibernate it...just in case

Mine did this and it's now in for repair apparently the back light had gone. If you have another monitor try and plug it in to see if it comes up on that if it's your back light it should work on another monitor.

It may not have shut down properly. One thing to try is to take out the power lead, then take out the battery as well. After 5 mins put them back in and see if it works.

If not, I'd go with the screen backlight theory. It could just be a loose connection and not cost too much to fix.

You're in IT aren't you HD I can tell as you're going with the turn off and on again approach.

I was just thinking the same thing. Exactly the sort of advice DH would give (supreme IT genius apparently)

You'd be amazed how often pcs lock up. Virtual memory gets full, files dont close fully, hardware doesnt release fully when shutting down. Rebooting may sound crap but, it solves many problems.

So there.

I know that sentence is written on a post it note and stuck on top of your monitor at work. I'm right aren't I?

Thanks. Wont be able to try anything until tonight. Im worried as it crashed on the internet, I know I wont still be connected but am worried what it will come up with if it doesn switch back on, will it just be the desktop page or the actual internet page it crashed on?

It wont come up on any page, most likely. It'll just revert to homepage
