I got a bag of components & leads from my dad - what does a hdmi to composite video/s-video + audio converter do?

It does exactly what it says on the tin!

It takes an HDMI output from, say, a DVD player, BluRay player, games console or set top box. The signal coming along the HDMI cable includes both video and audio. This converter splits the signal to give a composite video/s-video output which can be fed to a TV or computer monitor (provided they accept that form of input) and an audio output which you can feed to an amplifier or possibly straight to headphones.

It is unlikely that you have any use for such a device

Could he have used it for somehow connecting a TV, a CD/DVD player and a sound system so the TV sound came out of the speaker?

If so I am unlikely to bother Grin

Yes, that is a possibility. Although I would have thought it was more likely that he used it to get DVD sound out of the speaker so he could watch the DVD on the TV but get sound from the sound system.
