Obscure and rather dull iPhone problem

I have an electronic gate which I can open by phoning it and pressing when it answers. So that I can open it remotely while I'm in the car, I have put the number in my contact as number-pause-. This means I can use the controls on the steering wheel and not handle the phone.

It worked fine with my old phone (iPhone 4) but with my new phone (6s) it only works if I am holding the phone and not if I use it through the car. It does phone the gate, but when the gate answers it doesn't go on and do the *.

It's not a feature that I need very often, but a courier phoned me yesterday and I needed to let him through the gate and then let him back out a few minutes later. The only way to do it turned out to be by parking and getting the phone out of my handbag. Obviously that wouldn't be possible if I was on a motorway or something.

Any thoughts about settings or something that might be affecting it?

Thanks Ohthepressure, I have a 'pause' on it already, but I didn't know that 'wait' means that you press dial again to make it continue. I'll put a 'wait' on as well, after the 'pause' and see if I can do that from the controls on my steering wheel.
