Any idea why Chrome and Safari are not working, but the internet is fine (Mac)?

It's actually for my son but:

  1. He's receiving emails through Mail fine so the wifi/internet is working.

  1. Other users on the same macbook can use their browsers.

  1. I've uninstalled Chrome but now can't get on the internet to download it again.

  1. Safari looks like it gets stuck loading a page, but eventually loads it after a few minutes.

Any ideas of what to try next please?

I've never had separate user accounts on the same macbook.

Can you create another user account and see if you can connect from there? Can he move over to the new user and not use his old account? I guess some files can be copied across.

We have separate users as he shares it with his brother.

I guess, we could set up a new user, but it takes so long to transfer all his files that I was just looking for something a bit quicker if possible.

Is your son the main user? If not, has the main user turned off his internet access privileges/disallowed his use of those programs?

ah ok, we have an Admin user and two users for the DSs. I'll check that thank you.

ooh, this is weird, when I go in on the Admin account and bring up the user names, I can't click on DS1s name, it's kind of greyed out and unclickable.

Why would that be?

Is he still logged in?

no, I logged him out to switch to Admin user. (I think!)

Presumably you've rebooted the machine? There are a couple of bugs in the networking stack which mean that if you repeatedly switch users there's a small chance each time that the DNS settings get messed up, particularly if the machine is also moved between networks and/or the network settings advertised by the router change behind its back.

If not, we can get geeky and look more closely. But first check if a "Restart..." from the Apple Menu helps.
