iPad crashing - can I erase it without affecting my linked iPhone?

It is the first-world-est of FWPs, I know.

iPad is crashing to desktop whenever I try to open some apps or do anything like check for updates etc. I can't even back it up and it hasn't been backed up in weeks but that's not a massive problem as I only use it for reading those mega-threads that are rubbish on the mobile app or for FaceTime.

So, if I go to erase it from the settings panel it won't affect my phone content, is that right? I'm all set to press the button if you give me the go-ahead!
