Help? Why are my letters typing in a column?

I'm typing a table in word. Everything else is fine but in one box the letters are coming out in a column. The column is wide enough. Does anyone know why it's doing this and how I correct it, it's driving me potty!!

It's probably 'tabs' that are the issue. In the view menu at the top click 'show ruler' . A grey bar appears that shows where the tabs are. Slide these along to get a wider space to write in.

Tabs don't usually make an appearance in tables, you've got to go to quite a bit of effort to get them in there.

The other possibilities are the cell margins are set too high (they're normally 0.19cm I think) or the text direction for the cell is set to Vertical.

Right click in the cell in question, go to Table Properties... then the 'Cell' tab and then click on the Options button to view the cell margins.

Right click and choose Text Direction... for, well, text direction.
