Free easy to use video editing software?

I have lots of video clips from DCs in shows etc. Really need to be edited before archiving (things like taking the applause off the end of a song etc). Not wanting to create a work of art just edit bits mainly to reduce file sizes etc. Not interested in titles/transitions etc - rough and ready is fine.
Have used Windows Live Movie makers in past - which is fine but I always find it a pain - not intuitive. And I've always forgotten how to use it . Then you have to remember NOT to save it as a project ...and now trying to work out (again) how to save as MP4 or anything that can play on something else!
Think there MUST be an easier way ...is there?
