How do I get decent internet in a rural location

I'm completely clueless about how all this works but I'm trying to figure out how to find out how to get a decent internet connection where I live. I've got orange broadband at the moment and it takes about 20 mins to check my emails. We bought a 3G dongle thing which is better but keeps running out of data allowance. I'm looking for a way to be sure that the internet is gonna actually work before I rope myself into a 12 month contract with someone. My parents live 5 mins drive down the road and their internet connection is amazing but I'm told they are on a different telephone exchange so I can't just switch to the provider they have.

If anyone knows how i go about even starting to research this if really appreciate it!

Alas there is little that can be done. I setuo a system with a Satellite Internet and that works but speed varies hugely and it is expensive. So I DO NOT suggest that.

If your 3G signal is good I would explore that option more. Look at dataplans, see what you can get for various monthly charges.

I saw the item about White Space on Newsnight recently - I can't wait!
