Problems with hotmail.

Is anyone else having problems logging into hotmail accounts?
I keep having to request a code and it only works once.
They sent to another email address and now say they can't send and are texting them to my phone, I expect they will reach a limit and stop that before long.
I just want to get back to normal with email address and password.
Anyone got an answer?

Use gmail instead?

Have you got some sort of two-step authentication set up and are logging in from a new device?

Changing from hotmail would be very inconvenient-linked to FB etc. Not a new device-and I have used it with a one step log in for years.

yes it's very annoying and it messed up the sync to my phone. i switched it off by going into account settings --> security and password, then switch off the two-step verification process

(i think - this was a while ago)

they introduced it as a new security thing and made it compulsory to sign up to before you could disable it (i may be misremembering the details. it was just very annoying at the time)

How do I sign up for it? I think it is to do with outlook. I feel sure that is what it is. They had a bizarre thing in June when they said they were going to send me something on a particular date in July. I think I ignored it.

if you're being asked for the code then presumably you've already signed up to it. it would have been compulsory on whatever date in july they told you they were bringing it in. try the account settings thing and see if that makes sense

It sounds like 2-step authentication, and you should be able to turn it off somewhere. I'd recommend you don't though as it is pretty neat security.

The way it should work is that if you login from a new device, it sends a unique code to your phone (or at least it does for Facebook/Google/PayPal). Enter the code and it logs you in - you should also be able to request that it remembers the device you are on (obviously don't do this if you are on a public computer!)

I don't use hotmail but if you google hotmail and 2-step authentication you should find something useful. It is also well worth enabling it on other accounts where you have the option.

Thanks-most helpful. I will give it a go. I request that it remember the device and doesn't ask again but that is the bit not working-it doesn't remember and won't take the last code.

I have turned it off so will see what happens. Thanks.

that's the problem i had delph - it wasn't just for new devices it was every sodding time. it's great in principle but if it actually stops you being able to check emails at all then it's a proper pita

It would be fine if it was once, and I ticked the box to say 'don't ask again for this device' but it wanted a code every single time- and a new code!
Now that I have unchecked the 2 step verification it is back to normal- thankfully.
