Confused about buying ipad app and what happens if ipad gets broken.

Have bought an ipad 1 for 5 year old with speech delay and I want to get a speech app which will cost £140. I intend to insure the ipad as it will be used in school but am worried about losing the app too. I think if I buy through the apple App Store I can restore the app onto another ipad. Or can I?

Any ideas?

That's a very expensive app!!!

It will save to your Apple ID/iCloud. I think that means you can download it for free. I deleted what's app and didn't have to pay again.

Yes, you can download it again onto a new device, you just have to sign in with the same Apple ID.
The only exception is if the app has been withdrawn from the App Store in the meantime, and even then if you have transferred your purchases to a pc you would be able to sync it back to a new iPad. (I have an app that was taken off the App Store several years ago and I've still been able to put it on every new iDevice I've had).

That's sounds just right. And it's a very expensive app!

The new (refurb) ipad asked me to sign in or get an iCloud account........

I am a bit confused as when I download apps from the App Store I put in a password. I think this is for my apple account??? ........ @me.com? Is it different to the iCloud one?

I can't remember if I have a cloud or what the password is. Not made a not of one but I think I did ages ago Confused

Also how do I sync the app and the cloud account to my PC?

I have 3 pages of usernames and passwords so can be excused for being a but vague I hope!

Yes iCloud is linked to your Apple ID. It will be linked to the email address you signed up with. You get iCloud with your apple device. Think it's 5gb free storage?

The Aple ID email address you use for buying stuff can be the same as the me.com icloud address, but it doesn't have to be. I use my Gmail address for buying, the me.com address is used for find my iphone.

What's me.com? I thought OP was just giving an example.

If you want to sync the iPad to your computer you will need to install iTunes on your computer.

I hate iTunes.

iCloud is where you can back stuff up to without needing to also own a computer. You get a basic allowance but can buy more if needed.

If you buy things from the apple store, the purchase is associated with your Apple ID rather than the iPad, so if you also have an iPhone or iPod touch using that Apple ID, you can download the same app without having to pay again (the same goes for any in-app purchases).

the ipad 1 is pretty much obsolete now and there are no updates for it so if this app needs updates you won't be able to do it on this ipad

There are no new updates to the operating system for the iPad1, but that doesn't necessarily mean there are no updates for individual apps - that depends on the app developer. I still have my old iPad1 and several apps still update on it.

If you're paying that much for an app, I'd try contacting the developer first to see if you can find out how long they are planning to support the original iPad.

Many thanks I will do that, and it is a lot clearer now. Smile Smile

That's a good point, some apps will only work on the latest operating system, so if you haven't got ios7, you might not be able to download the app at all.

E.g. My iPhone is only on ios5 and I couldn't download flappy bird because it needed iOS 7. Other apps I can't download updates for because the updates need iOS 7 although the original app still works.

I am pretty sure the app said ipad 1-4 and not one of the iPhones so that makes sense. I have emailed them anyway about the update issue so will check the app site again and await their reply.

Cheers

The app says needs iOS 5.1.1 or above and the ipad I have says it's updated to 5.1. Smile

Have you discussed this with the SENCo at your child's school? I'm sure this is something they could fund on your behalf.
