You can do Skype calls without video.
Do you need to call them often? I have a lot of family in the states and Europe. So I have a phone plan from my land line which means call to certain countries is in include. It also means I can call mobiles in the states at no extra cost ( this is not the same for other European countries).
Skype, or you can also use Gchat (if you have a Gmail account). I believe calling US numbers is even free right now on Gchat.
it's similar to Skype in that it's internet-based, I usually find I have better call quality with Gchat for some reason.another possibility for you is to buy an international calling card - you buy a prepaid card, dial a local number on your landline, and then enter a code. You can get pretty good rates that way. (with Tesco it's 2p/min to the US: phone-shop.tesco.com/international-calling-cards/)
I used the Viber app iPhone to iPhone when my DD was in America. It works over the Internet in the same way as Skype so was totally free. Could also text for free with it too.
1p per minute on your landline via telediscount.
Still not sure why you don't use Skype? It can be used for voice-only calls.
for Skype to work well you need a decent internet connection and a decent microphone, so if the OP is not sure on either count she'd be better off using her landline.
