Laptop or desktop?

Could someone outline the pros and cons for me to help me decide?

I mean obvs the laptop is portable, but actually we don't need portability

Could I just buy the processor (?) bit and plug it into the tv and use that as a monitor and use a wireless mouse and keypad? That would be ideal but is it possible?

DS is about to start school, so I figure might need to do educational stuff on it. I'd use it for storing music / photos and for internetting

I'd like as cheap as possible without huge compromises on storage or what have you [luddite]

Hi,

In terms of Pros and Cons, You'd probably be able to find a desktop PC cheaper then an equivalent spec'd laptop. The only other difference would be the portability of a laptop over the desktop.

In terms of connecting your PC to a TV, as long as they have the same inputs and outputs its entirely possible. Ideally you'd have a TV and PC with HDMI ports as you'd only need one cable for audio and visual. You can also do the same with a laptop and TV with the added possibility of carrying it away if you need to.

Ooo thanks eraser, very helpful

I quite like the idea of hooking something up to the tv, we rarely watch it and then DS could (presumably) watch iplayer things on a big screen from the comfort if the sofa

Like I say portability isn't a factor, so an equivalent desktop that is cheaper sounds the ticket

If I took a photo of the sockets on the back of the tv into a computer shop they'd be able to tell me if it had the right holes? (It's quite a posh tv, although it's a few years old)

Ok I've googled and yes, I think the tv has the right shaped hole

And blow me down its actually labelled hdmi in on the tv. Never has technology been do simple!

Right do I need the box thing - is that called a processor? A wireless mouse and keyboard then I'm good to go

A processor is the chip inside a PC that processes commands etc. The box with everthing inside is known as the computer or PC so that's what you need!
