movies on a tablet when driving in france - possible?

We usually do DVDplayer in the car on hols, but wondered if you can play movies on a tablet if you're on the move. We haven't bought the tablet yet, but looking at a sub £200 one.
The guy in PCworld said something about the cloud, but surely that wouldn't work driving (as we wouldn't have internet connection?) and not sure it would work abroad? The storage on some is only about 16gb, so not sure we could have too many movies stored.
I fancy the nexus but it only has a micro usb - can i store movies by some device - or would the micro sd ones give more options - can i store a few movies on an sd card?
So, to anyone who understands these things (and I really don't!) is it possible to play movies on a tablet if you're on the move?

We have iPads and dd1 uses it in the car on long journeys. You can get cases that strap onto the headrest.

As for storage, I have a 1TB wireless hard drive that we store all our media on and it transmits its own network. So I have shedloads on that and anyone within about 150ft (with the password) can access it, three devices at once.

I'm not saying you should get iPads btw, these drives work with any tablet that connects to wifi.

You can down load movies from the Google play store or Love film in the UK - but you are limited to how many. My ipad will hold 2 films and a few episodes of Horrible Histories etc but it is quite full of apps. If you get a Nexus and don't fill it up with games/apps etc you should be able to get a few on there. You won't be able to access the stores/iPlayer when in France though to buy new ones.

DH watches stuff on his Nexus so we will put something on for the children for our day in the car in France.

Not sure how much, but it's a 32 not 16 and that's just under £200. I got one for my birthday too and love it.

Thank you, that would be perfect but forgive me being a dumbo.. if we don't have an internet connection cos eg. we're in the car, could that hard drive still send info to the tablet?

You don't need an internet connection, it is an internet connection.

Not sure what you mean Porto. It is normal hard drive so you can store anything on there.

I have an Archos 70b with 250GB hard disk. It's 'old' technology in that its been out for about 4 years now. Great for carrying around your media collection but bit slow for surfing.

Some of the recent tablets support SD cards up to 32gb. The new ones support up to 64gb. Either should be good enough.

I use a piece of software called DVD Catalyst to 'shrink' movies down to 0.7 GB. It cost about £6.

I use a Nexus 7 and a micro USB on the go cable .

With the addition of the Nexus Media Importer app (couple of pounds I think) it means that any USB storage device can be plugged into the Nexus.

Personally I have only used it with USB memory sticks and SD cards (via a USB card reader). But others have definitely used it to plug in portable USB hard drives - cheaper than the wireless version.

This worked brilliantly for us on a recent backpacking style holiday.
