Got a new laptop recently and in the shop all laptops were Windows 8 so no option.

Found it infuriating. I don't have a touch pad anything so it was a real pain relearning stuff, and even the Skype version which I use a lot is not straightforward, in fact have just been looking for the calculator but goodness knows where that is.

But search online for 'Windows 8 problems' and you get rants from geeks saying users just need to read the instructions blah blah or download such and such and it's just like 7, sneer sneer, it's great for my game stuff - huh! ............so eat your words idiots.

I've had no problems with it at all. I think it's very neat and tidy and much more consistent than previous versions. Sure, it takes a bit of learning, but so does any new operating system. Windows can't stay the same forever now, can it?

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Tue 07-May-13 22:57:33

Oh and the calculator, search for 'calculator' in apps then you can pin it to your start screen.

I hate it.

SucksToBeMe Tue 07-May-13 23:18:40

Brew, I hate it more!

SucksToBeMe Tue 07-May-13 23:19:10

BRAW, sorry grin

Cantbelieveitsnotbutter Tue 07-May-13 23:26:08

It is awful

Bloody hate windows 8. Our laptop was on it but dp killdisked it and installed 7 instead, 8 is on par with vista for shitness.

I hate and loathe it with a passion. It's harder to use not easier. I thought the whole point of new operating software was to improve on previous versions, not make it harder!

AddClassic shell, this will give you a start button, have a read of this .It gives some great tips and if you so wish after installing Classic shell, search for "hide metro" and you can tweak it so you never see the app screen again.
I actually regret buying a desktop a few months ago and having windows 7 on it,windows 8 is just like 7 but with added bits.

Yes...loathe it.

"8 is on par with vista for shitness."

Agreed. OH is a techie geek and hates it with a passion. He has fiddled with it a lot so that the start up and shut down is more like Windows 7. Before he amended it I had to do 6 clicks of the mouse to shut down.

All the techie computer magazines are full of complaints about Windows 8, and yesterday Microsoft announced that they have released an update. The more cynical journalists are saying it is because they realize that their new operating system was too radical a change for most people (or in other words crap).

IMO Microsoft have made too many assumptions about their target market. Not everyone has a Windows phone and not everyone has a laptop with a touchscreen. And surely anyone who knows anything about marketing should know that making radical changes in any product can be counter productive.

Hit the windows button (bottom left of your keyboard) it turns back into xp/W7.
I'm sure W8 is lovely on a touch screen, its not on our desktop which is the grown up work computer. (We have Xbox, netbook and phones for fun)

Why release something designed for touch screens onto machines that aren't, though?

Because Microsoft is stuffed to the gills with cretins.

You can still buy Win7 machines online. They're marketed as businesses, and they run Win7 Pro, but they're not Win8.

My dh bought me a new comp for Xmas, this is windows 8 and I also hate hate hate it. I am going to sell it and have gone back to using my old Xp comp even though some of it isn't working correctly.

we had to buy a new laptop for DS2 to use at uni (he managed to cook the hard disc on the old one confused) & found that looking for nearly-new recon ones was the best way to find Windows 7

I believe there are still some actual new 7 machines out there but you have to look very hard

My current (but old) PC had Vista when bought new, previous one used XP & I did prefer that

Ponders Wed 08-May-13 13:14:50

there are some on Tesco's website in fact - you can search for 7 Home.

mostly from merchants though.

flatpackhamster Wed 08-May-13 15:01:02

You can buy brand-new ones from the Misco website. Desktops and laptops can now both be found with 5-year or 3-year next business day warranties, and the prices are pretty reasonable.

AIUI Windows 9 will include all the stuff that Windows 8 ought to have included and leave out all the crud, in the same way that Windows 7 basically fixed the suckatude of Vista.

flatpackhamster Wed 08-May-13 15:02:32

Here's a good example.

Core i5 processor, plenty of disk space, adequate RAM, Win7 pro and a 5-year warranty.

Grinkly Wed 08-May-13 15:43:32

I hate having to type stuff in to find it as in Win 8.

Much preferred having a little plan in my head of the hierarchy of folders so if I didn't remember the exact title of something, or had misspelt it I knew where to look.

Also hate all this linking of social networking sites, though that's not necessarily Win8, just don't want someone to go online and see everything about my life, family etc.

Grinkly Wed 08-May-13 16:11:13

Windows can't stay the same forever now, can it

No, it can fade into the distance as it's overtaken by apple.

BIWI Wed 08-May-13 17:21:11

Yep. I really regret not making the switch to Apple. I think that will be my next move, when this laptop dies.

Ponders Wed 08-May-13 18:27:04

hamster, the one I got for DS2 was this:

Acer Aspire 5755G, Intel® Core™ i5-2450M Dual Core Processor, 15.6" HD Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD Rewriter, Dedicated GT 630M Graphics, USB 3, HDMI, NX.RV3EK.002

£450 inc 3 years unlimited warranty

that was a one-off though, with just slight cosmetic marks. It doesn't have anti-reflective screen, & I think the Misco Samsung one has a better laid out keyboard, but he's happy with it
