With limited Internet / app needs, would an iPad 1 be sufficient?

My mum has helped us out hugely with various things and now we are all straight me and DH are considering buying her an iPad ( she will soon be laptops free as she joint owned one with my brother.)
Basically, she is likely to use apps such as Ebay and Amazon and is most likely to use Safari if she wants to look stuff up, rather than downloading the app for it. However, I suspect she may start to use it for more than she currently thinks she would ( she makes out she is more clueless and disinterested than she actually is) so I am wondering if an iPad 1 would be compatible or she would actually need the 2....?

Does it have to be an iPad. There are so many tablets on the market nowadays.

Ds2 has an iPad2 and I can honestly say we wasted our money because he is never going to use it to its full potential.

I have a kindle fire HD and there is nothing I can't use it for that I used DSs iPad for.

I wouldn't recommend the iPad 1 any longer.

It's a bit slow by modern standards and you can no longer get the latest IOS onto it. As time goes on it will be left behind and you will find slowly that less & less apps work on it.

For the money I'd suggest looking at a Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 7 instead.

The ipad 2 or ipad mini would feel much faster in comparison. All depends on your budget.
