We have bought DS1 a Kindle and I can't decide whether to set it up linked to my Amazon account or to make him one of his own. I'm interested to see what others have done.
Using my account would mean (i think) that he would have all my books downloaded on to his kindle (not really a problem as medieval detective novels are no interest for him) but would mean he could use my kindle to read his books if we were away and didn't have his. He would also have access to my one click ordering (this would need policing obvious ). He could re-read the books we have already brought for in on my kindle account (3 so far) as I don't think we can transfer them to another account.
His own account would mean he only got the books he was interested in and I wouldn't link a credit card to it probably just add a gift voucher from time to time. I would have access to the email linked to the account so I could keep and eye on what he was reading. But he couldn't read the books we have already bought for him
I just don't know which is the best way to work it, what do other MNetters think?
I have two sons with kindle fires. Ds1 has his own account which I set up with his own email account and a gift card. He's 14. I have more control over ds2's kindle which is set up with my own account. There are parental controls which allow you to turn off web browsing if desired and set a password for downloading anything from amazon. Ds2 is 10. I would recommend using your own amazon account for your ds' kindle until he is older.
DS2 has a Kindle kinked to my account. Technically he could order books but the email notifications get sent through to my email account, which is on my phone, so I would know about it pretty damn quickly!
He could also access all my books via the Cloud I believe but I don't see this as being a huge problem.
Oddly, the Paperwhite appears to come with some form of parental controls but the Touch (which I gave to DS2) does not.
