Your laptop presumably has Windows Media Player? You can rip CDs through that, but make sure you change the settings to not add security and to rip as MP3 not WMA.

We have a Brennan. It is very simple to use: transfer cds onto it, then play through hifi or speakers.

I also put our vinyl record collection on it. It was a massive job as I wanted the tracks separate, so each LP took about an hour to add, including naming each album and each track, but the quality is excellent and it's lovely being able to listen to all our music at the touch of a button.

As they recommend, we back it up onto an external drive occasionally, in case of mechanical failure, or theft.

Oh bugger, see how clueless I am, I mean CD not DVDs, bloody predictive text.

Ok, be gentle with me, complete beginner here. Dh and I would like to get rid of DVd mainly for cluttering and to be able to play them more easily. I have put a few on iTunes in the past but find it pretty cumbersome and have no apple gadgets apart from an old-ish iPod each. Our ancient desktop monitor broke so we no longer use it. We have an ancient laptop with disc drive, which would be our only option for loading DVDs into. We also have a small laptop with no disc drive and a Kindle HD and android smartphones.

I heard about a Google version of iTunes that will convert for you, is that right? Also interested in systems allowing you to download music which are not iTunes - what options are there?

We don't have a hard drive and guess need to get one for the music, will this protect if for example laptop dies? And for playing the uploaded music, do we use the iPod or the laptops/Kindle?

Thanks for any advice for an old gimmer. I am aware that I sound about 150 years old...blush
