how to free up phone memory(19 Posts)
The other thing that really gets my goat is, not only do you need Google Play Store but also Google Play Services, and some apps won't work without it. It takes up a Massive amount of memory. You are right- we have been conned. Why do I have to have a Google email address as well.
EVERYONE please watch this video and sign up to the ThunderClap at the end if you agree!
Steeking the caches are usually quite small. I own my phone outright and couldn't root it is can't remember why, I factory resetted it, got the app but it didn't work. So that's not always going to work.
So now hey presto, I use the phone only for the basics.
Removing auto updates helps, as does uninstalling google play each time you use it. It really is a con. makes me laugh when you get those news items that waft on about the marvels of smartphone technology, the freedom offered by having the world at our fingertips. Cods.
Don't root your phone if you're on a contract! Only do it if you own the phone outright.
If you go into the manage apps section and clear the cache on each one it helps. also set your phone so it doesn't do any automatic updates. if there are apps you don't use and you can't delete, then uninstall any updates from them.
I made the same mistake as people on here- got a cheap phone expecting it to be all singing and dancing.
Didn't realise the following
- cheap phones have a very small internal memory and androids come loaded up with allsorts of crap which you will never use. Buy the phone outright, then you can root it and delete all the rubbish. New apps take up a lot of space and even if it's no the SD card they will still use up some internal memory. I had to get rid of facebook on mine, and now only use my phone for calls, texts and emails.
Haven't got an iplayer, the problem was google play updating itself before downloading the Twitter app, leaving not enough room. I'm really pissed off.
Jules just don't update your iplayer, it's 17megs, google play is now 12 mgb, takes up my last available memory. Android users have been seriously conned by the phone manufacturers. I hope someone sues their assess through some kind of consumer protection clause.
Meanwhile I will have to shell out another three figure sum to get something that will actually run apps.
I'd be interested too. I have an HTC Wildfire, bought a big memory card and moved everything I could onto it. The only apps I had left which couldn't be moved were the John Lewis app and Twitter.
Had to get rid of the JL app as I was getting the "insufficient room" message all the time. So that just left twitter, still getting the insufficient storage message - then you can't even look at photos or text messages. I accidentally removed twitter while trying to free up some space - and now I can't download it again - if I try, Google Play updates itself first, taking all the available space and leaves no room for twitter.
It is so frustrating. I'm not very techie and don't want to attempt or risk completely disabling everything - but all I want is a phone which enables me to send/receive calls & texts, do twitter and MN, and look up the odd thing on the internet. I don't want 100s of games or other apps, don't need Google Play using up all my memory.
From googling it seems this is a really common problem, and not just with HTC phones although they do seem to be notoriously short on memory space.
I really feel that I've wasted the money buying this phone, am seriously trying to palm it off on my daughter. But which phone should I get instead? Don't want/can't afford an iphone. Maybe a Galaxy, but not if I'm going to end up with the same issue.
If anyone has any ideas on this I will be very interested!
Re-kindling this thread.
I was told you need to get into the Root to divide the memory or something, but it doesn't work for most phones. There is an 'app to SD' programme but that doesn't do an awful lot as most apps are not designed to move to SD.
Since doing this (about a year ago) I have found that apps like Google Play and Facebook, even Adobe whotsit (just a reader) are getting bigger and bigger and completely clogging up my memory to the point where I have no space for apps at all.
You can't download the new iplayer without Google Play and it's also bigger so that's off the cards completely. Fed up now.
What to do? I'm thinking of buying an i-thing just to use for apps and restricting my phone for phone and email only.
I have same problem with a Samsung Galaxy Ace. The internal memory is just too small for the OS plus a few apps. Most apps go on SD but some won't. Some apps came with the phone and I don't use them but I can't delete them (it says they are system apps - since when is AutoTrader needed for the system to run!).
Would be nice if in app store (play.google in my case as it's an Android phone) it said if the app installed to phone or SD memory... then I could choose not to download anything that did not install to SD card.
Just had a look on an htc forum - lots of people having the same issue, so it appears it is a 'feature' of the phone - grr! Some replies with lots of technical things I don't understand, but I think basically it comes down to putting up with it or doing something that invalidates the warranty (rooting or somesuch techie speak)
I'm off to check when my contract runs out...
my iphone is the same
You can perhaps get an iPhone. :-)
Argh! Exactly the same prob with my htc desire. So hoping someone would know how to resolve it. Will keep checking back <crosses fingers>.
I have the same problem with my HTC salsa. Have had to limit the number of apps I've downloaded (now only have 1) and keep moving my pics to my computer. Otherwise I can't use Twitter or fb. I went and bought a 16gig SD card but it doesn't lake any difference. I've for 1 year left until an upgrade-any answers?
I have this problem with the HTC Wildfire. I thought it was my photos and videos, so transferred them all to my computer and then deleted them off the phone. It didn't make a damn bit of difference to the phone's memory, just the SD memory. It is driving me mad.
I can't even download the latest update as I don't have enough memory. Really want to know the answer to this.
I actually quite like the phone, other than this, but yes, it's quite annoying. I have photos and videos that are probably taking up some space, again don't know how to move them to SD card.
mine is doing the same - pisses me off! Would never get an htc phone again
My HTC desire is telling me that phone storage space is getting low. I am not sure how to free it up. I have a few apps downloaded, some of which I have moved to the SD card, but some do not give me this option. I have moved my contacts on to the SD card, although I can't work out how to display these, and therefore be able to delete them from the phone memory. Don't want to just keep them on the SIM card, rather than phone as then they won't link to FB etc.
I also have various pdf docs that I have downloaded, but can't work out how to delete these (not sure of they're stored on phone or SD card.
I'm probably missing something really obvious, but any ideas to clear some space would be gratefully received.
