Calling Irish Gardeners - Wild Rhubarb

We have discovered wild rhubarb growing in our garden. I dont want to leave it as it will take over like a wild thing. Any ideas as to the best way to eliminate it. Am I better digging (and re-digging) it out, or is there some lovely chemical that will do it for me. Many thanks for any advice.

Wild rhubarb? I've never heard of that here - I thought it was from China? Are you sure that's what it is?

The house is in Mayo and that's what I've always known it as, nearly taken over the island. Its a variety of gunnera, something like this rhubarb www.ukwildflowers.com/Web_pages/gunnera_tinctoria_giant_rhubarb.htm. Grows in big clumps that we used to hide under as children! We're only over on holidays now so need to keep it under control.
