am i just being tight, cos i'm surprised compost bins are so expensive. What did they do in the old days before plastic bins were invented? I can't bear to spend all that money on stuff i just dump on the soil!!

contact the council.

my big one was a tenner.

just use random bits of crap that are lying around your house/attic to make some sort of enclosure

Or contact your local council - they often sell them at a reduced rate

Try HERE. We could get a large one for £10 in our area, so give it a go.

Another vote for the council. We got ours from Bucks CC with a kitchen caddy for £10 delivered!

If your council don't do a discounted one (and I'd be ASTONISHED if they don't), make one out of 4 pallets (just wire them together at the corners). Not beautiful but work brilliantly well.

Ours was free from the council

I just looked on our council website - their cheapest "reduced price" composter is £22 + £5 delivery

thanks for the advice but i've just checked my local council and their 'discounted' bin is £27! That's more than Tesco are selling them for!! cant think what on earth I could make one out of. dont you need a lid to open, stuff bits in, then a bottom opening bit to get the decomposed gunk out of?

No you just need roughly four sides

or you can just put it in a PILE

Might be worth posting on freecycle. Compost bins are offered most days on my local site.
