Herbs - What to do?

I planted a little herb garden yesterday - only 10 small plants. They look okay and I'm sure they'll be fine while the weather's good. I was wondering what to do in the winter. Will they survive or will they die off and then I'll have to get new ones.

I also planted a basil plant that I got in the veg department at the supermarket. Will that be okay in the garden?

my thyme, planted last year is still there - I have just checked!
I think hardy ones will be fine.

Basil - not ime, although probably people with green fingers who know what they're doing could pull it off. I;d keep it in the greenhouse.

Depends what herbs they are. Some are annuals (basil, coriander, marjoram) and need to be grown each year, while others are perenials or bulbs (thyme, bay, lavender, mint, chives etc)and so only need to be put in once.

I'll add Sage, Thyme and Rosemary to PistachioLemons list of herbs that stand a good chance of surviving UK winters OK.

Basil definitely won't as it's not frost hardy. I grow outdoors: sage, parsley, rosemary, thyme, oregano/majoram, tarragon, mint, chives, and fennel. They all survived the snow and cold this winter.
