Not specifically for allotments, but the best all round vegetable gardening book I know is Grow Your Own Vegetables by Joy Larckom.
The other book that I refer to a lot which is ideal for the basics for allotment scale growing is Lawrence D Hills' book Organic Gardening but I would imagine it would be out of print now.

I got an allotment last year, and I've found "The Half Hour Allotment" by Lia Leendertz to be really helpful. It has a guide to what is worth growing and what isn't, and how many of each plant you should bother growing. Mind you, when buying it I did think the title referred to half an hour per week, when in fact it's per day!! But I've got away with only doing an hour per week...

Second the half hour allotment, and the joy larkcom book.

I also liked 'the gourmet gardener' by Bob Flowerdew, but mainly for inspiration and the writing style rather than detailed step by step instructions.

'The Allotment Book' by Andi Clevely is a good one too.

I've got the allotment handbook by caroline foley. found it useful for setting up and advice on crop rotation, general maintenance and veg guide, but needed another one on planting distances and stuff as it was a bit vaguer on this. I used the vegetable expert by that hessayon man
