there's soooo much stuff about planting what when and how on the internet I'm a bit confused by it all!! Would just like some simple advice to get me started growing my own, maybe onions/garlic/carrotts in some pots. or something along those lines that we could actually make use of. tia

We just started on an allotment this year.

Pots are brilliant because they fill space and seem to be idiot proof. We grew onions from seed and they have done OK although we have a mad situation where we did not want to thin out because some had not taken and we thought we would not have very many. Broad beans were successful (wish we had planted more) and corn is good too. Brussel sprout plants were got at by the pigeons. I think carrots can be tricky - I think they are a bit fussy about their soil - they like sandy.

so if i get some pots, some compost from garden centre and some seeds i could pretty much get going straight away? when would/could i expect to see results? would they be year round or just certain times of the year?
