Anyone know anything about orchids?

Got given one a couple of years ago which blossomed and the flowers dropped off. Didn't know anything about them so left it but kept watering and it started sprouting again. It looks like it has sprouted new roots at the top but the original roots have died. Really don't want to chuck it out as it looks like the new roots are still alive. Any tips on how to re-pot?

I noticed in the garden centre last week there is special orchid compost. don't know if there was instructions on the pack how to though. they do come back after ages though
