I've got a load of pink fir apple potatoes chitting on an indoor windowsill which isn't very bright but not dark either. How long will they take to ......em...do whatever it is they're going to do and how will I know when they're ready to plant?

they should have short green sprouts on them - should be fine in a cool light place. If they have sprouts then any time in the next week or two when the weather improves would be fine for planting.

Pink fir apple seems to take ages to chit and even then have v small sprouts compared to other varieties so don't wait for them to grow v long!

Your pink fir apples will takw some time as they are a late variety- ignore anyone who tells you to panic- i planted mine ages ago last year and was the only on the allotment who had successful potatoes.... the only thing you havge to wait for is the last frosts to pass, so nows fine, but you still ahve time!
