Please help - dh has wanted to start a veg plot in our garden for ages so I thought I'd buy seeds and stuff for him this xmas and bundle it as a hamper with a how to book. Any ideas what I can include for a beginner and can you recommend a book? Thanks

What a lovely idea.
It's not the best time for buying seeds but...
A spade
Fork
Trowel
Bamboo canes
Flask for hot drinks
Gloves
Watering can
also buy some linament for rubbing into achey backs

this is a good book

traditionally onion seed and leek seed are sown on New Year's Day so they make a very good Xmas stocking present. A good heated propagator and some Rootrainers would be in my Xmas Stocking, along with some lovely copper rings to go round plants to keep the slugs off. These are my absolute favourite garden tools, better even than stainless steel www.implementations.co.uk/ (sorry never learned how to do links properly)

Or a gift voucher for an online site so he can choose his own as the seasons change?

The allotment handbook is brilliant. Covers all fruits and veg and basically provides a month by month plan of what you need to sow/plant etc and when as well as explaining different techniques really well. You don't have to have an allotment to use it!
