Has anyone grown Japanese Maples from seed?

My Acer has seeds this year for the first time, and I fancy trying to propogate them.

I've looked at a few websites but the advice is different on each. Some say you can just throw the seeds into a pot in the Autumn, others that you need to soak the seeds, others that you need to refridgerate them. Some even say not to bother because the leaves on plants grown from seed aren't as nice as those grown from cuttings.

Anyone done it and care to share the secrets of their success? I'm more into growing veggies myself so plants are a bit of a mystery to me

I haven't tried cuttings.

I just spotted the seeds at the weekend and came over all Alan Titchmarsh!

I quite fancy getting the greenhouse back into use and pottering in there with me seeds and me compost ...
