Very nearly dead christmas tree, any tips to help it live?

I was given a small fir tree in a pot as a wedding favour just over a year ago, as was dh and ds. The ds tree died quite quickly, but the other two were fine until now. One has lost nearly all its needles and is looking very sorry for itself but the other, which has been treated exactly the same is okay. I gently scratched at the trunk of the nearly dead tree and there is green underneath, so although dh said it was a gonner, I am quite hopeful that all is not lost. I've given it loads of water this eve (it's still in the pot).
Should I feed it, or just give it plenty of water? Or is all hope already lost?

how big is the pot? how big is the tree? it might need a bigger pot and fresh compost. Even if the pot/tree size is OK it will benefit from repotting if it's been in the same stuff for a year. When you take it out of its pot if the roots are jammed in then put it in a slightly bigger one - NOT a huge one, just an inch or two bigger. If they're not then just shake off the old compost and replace with new. Go for a soil-based compost (John Innes type) the bags will tell you which one is for an established plant. It will certainly need to be watered well and kept somewhere a bit sheltered and shady while it tries to recuperate. But it may not survive - try not to get too emotionally involved (sob...)
