I have an exciting question about planters

I am not a gardener. I know absolutely nothing.
I thought I had the planter thing nailed. Bought some lovely ones online, bought compost and a couple of box plants. Filled one of the planter with compost, shoved the box in, filled the gaps with compost and watered. I felt quite proud of myself to be honest!

Then my mother came over yesterday and said the planters do not have holes in and I need to drill holes. WTAF? What is the point of a planter without holes if they need holes? So what I have bought are not planters then? I don't get it. Effectively, I have four useless planters (unless I drill them).

I think most plastic type planters don't have drainage holes in but do have indentations where you can drill a hole if required. Some people like to plant up a cheap, plastic flower pot that has drainage holes with annuals or whatever and place this inside the decorative one

It's easy the to take out the inner one and replace as the plants fade or just to change the look of it, swapping with others in different parts of the garden

These are metal ones. Hmm, yes I could just place the cheap plant pot inside I guess. But doesn't look as nice. The planter is a lot deeper than the pot though, what would I place it on? Compost? Pebbles or bark maybe?

I usually chuck some drainage materials in the bottom before I put the compost in. Some gravel or broken crockery Hmm

Or the packaging foam. It depends how thick they are I managed to make holes with a pair of scissors in a couple of cheap ones . Otherwise ask a friend with a drill.
