I think they're primulas ,low to ground .Not sure of difference btwn polyanthus .

They seem to be putting on a lot of growth at the centre of the plant ,producing tough .large leaves .I don't really like the look ( sorry enthusiastic little plants ) and wondered if any one knew the cause ,how to avoid and if I can do anything with them now .

Did they flower recently?

You can probably cut them right back with secateurs, or even shears if they are that big. They should 'bounce back' and could even flower again.

They've been flowering over winter .I keep deadheading them .

It's the "heart" of the plant that's going bonkers and producing the big leaves .

Should I cut the whole plant or just the big leaves ?

Ah ,ok I've just found something on line .

Cut all leaves by a third or half after flowering and down to the ground in Autumn .

And I think I'll rehome some from containers now in sun .And add some gravel round those in the shady bed .
