Just wondering if this will work? And how big the pots really need to be. Has anyone tried to grow it in pots

Big, and potted on regularly. Treat as grass, because it is grass, with plenty of well-rotted manure and water a lot.

Make sure the pot does not curl in at the top end otherwise you will have to smash the pot to get the plant out..

You can do bamboo in pots, but it's not completely ideal - you need a big pot and you need to water and feed pretty vigilantly. Getting it out to divide it as it grows can also be a bit of a nightmare - particularly if you have unfortunately chosen a pot with a lip! If you choose a clump-forming variety, like Phyllostachys nigra, it won't spread like billy-o in the soil, and will save you a world of hassle. They need sun to really cane up well.

Hahahaha, x-post with echt about lips on pots. I guess we've both made that mistake??!

We have some in a pot, that were extra shoots from an expanding clump in the ground. We don't do ANYTHING to look after it, and it seems to survive OK.
